Monitoring and breathing support

At the time of our visit, only 2 of the unit's 10 neonatal monitors and just 1 of its 3 CPAP machines were working. Nurses also need more pulse oximeters, syringe pumps and oxygen concentrators to monitor and support babies struggling to breathe.

Essential medications

Surfactant and caffeine citrate are frequently unavailable, especially in the second half of the calendar year. When these medications are out of stock, babies who need them go without.

Staff training

Nurses are asking for training in newborn monitoring and equipment use. Some have not yet been trained in neonatal resuscitation or Kangaroo Care, and equipment is going unused because of lack of training.

Support for families

The kangaroo care room has just 4 beds and is small and basic. NICU parents share 2 breast pumps, which cannot meet demand, and transport costs make it hard for some families to return for their baby's follow-up appointments.

We listen first, verify every need with the hospital team, and only then raise funds and deliver support. We'll report what's done, what's underway and what's planned.

The hospital's priorities

In the hospital's words, their priorities are: equipment first, because it is the most urgent for the wellbeing of patients, then staff training and essential medications.
